YOUTH IN EXTENSION YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
A total of 55,408 (unduplicated) youth participated in the Washington State Extension Youth Development Program for the 2006-2007 4-H year, a slight decrease (-387) from the previous year. Girls represented 57% (31,426) of the youth participants; 43% (23,982) were boys. A total of 59,204 youth (including duplicates) participated in one or more WSU Extension Youth Development programs.
In addition to youth programs traditionally led by WSU Extension 4-H professionals and volunteers, these statistics include youth served by EFNEP (Extension Family & Nutrition Education Program), Food $ense, Master Gardeners, and other Extension areas delivering youth programming consisting of 6 or more hours of contact.
Youth participated in the following Delivery Methods (includes duplicates):
- 19,952 youth were members in 1,616 4-H Clubs (‘05-‘06: 21,634 members enrolled in 1,688 clubs). Club membership was reported in four categories:
- 4-H Community Clubs (18,481 youth)
- 4-H In-School Club (101 youth)
- 4-H After-School Clubs (842 youth)
- Military 4-H Clubs (528 youth)
- 29,914 youth were involved in 1,144 School Enrichment groups (‘05-‘06: 30,770 youth were involved in 1,235 School Enrichment groups).
- 5,273 youth were enrolled in 140 Special Interest, Short-Term groups (‘05-‘06: 4,415 youth were enrolled in 156 Special Interest groups).
- 3,649 youth participated in 102 4-H Camping programs (‘05-‘06: 2,444 youth participated in 94 Camps); of these:
- 4-H Overnight Camps (1,546 youth participated in 37 camps)
- 4-H Day Camps (2,103 youth participated in 65 camps)
- 323 youth enrolled in Family 4-H or Individual Study (‘05-‘06: 298 youth enrolled in Individual Study).
- 93 youth participated in 6 School Age Child Care groups (‘05-‘06: 235 youth participated in 16 SACC groups)
Total (unduplicated) youths represented the following Racial Ethnic Groups:

- 70% (38,524) White (person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, N. Africa, or Middle East).
- 13% (7,294) Hispanic (person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or S. American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race).
- 6% (3,422) American Indian or Alaskan Native (person having origins in any of the original peoples of N. America).
- 5.5% (3,044) Black (person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa).
- 5% (2,834) Asian or Pacific Islander (person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, SE Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands).
- .5% (290) Other combinations.
Youth participants represented the following Residence distribution:

- 8% (4,495) live on farms.
- 38% (20,855) live in towns with populations under 10,000 or in rural non-farm areas.
- 29% (16,352) live in towns and cities with populations of 10,000-50,000.
- 10% (5,321) live in suburbs of cities of over 50,000.
- 15% (8,385) live in central cities of over 50,000.

VOLUNTEERS IN 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
- VOLUNTEERS
6,655 adult volunteers were involved in Extension Youth programs, a decrease of 169 over the previous year. Of these, 5,188 (78%) were women and 1,467 (22%) were men. 811 members were enrolled as youth volunteers. Reported adult and youth volunteers totaled 7,466.
- VOLUNTEER TRAINING
2,984 adult volunteers and 1,351 youth volunteers were reported as participating in training workshops at the county and state levels; 1,587 other adults (4-H professionals, non-volunteers, or adults from other organizations) were trained through 4-H programs.

These totals include youth projects (with duplication, i.e., one youth may enroll in more than one project) for both individual and group enrollments. Projects reflect a minimum of 6 hours of contact. Individual projects are noted where statistically significant (over 4,000).
