4-H National Conference, March 20-25, 2010
--Jan Klein
The National 4-H Conference is the flagship youth development opportunity of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Deemed “the Secretary’s Conference”, this experience upholds a tradition dating back to 1927. The National 4-H Conference expands on 4-H’s essential elements of Independence, Belonging, Mastery and Generosity by allowing youth to master skills to make positive life choices; participate in decision-making processes; act responsibly; positively influence their communities; and develop into informed, active, engaged citizens. In addition to strengthening leadership skills, the purpose of National 4-H Conference is to:
- Reinforce the rich history of 4-H and its valuable tie to Cooperative Extension and the land-grant system;
- Engage delegates with leaders from USDA, CSREES, the Land-Grant University system, as well as, their local, state and national partners; enlighten delegates to the valuable work and research coming out of the land grant universities;
- Stimulate thought around key matters and move delegates to action in their local communities;
- Provide an opportunity for delegates to engage as citizens by meeting with their congressional representatives to discuss issues affecting their communities;
- Enhances valuable 21st century skills leadership skills such as adaptability, team building and communications.
- Exposes delegates to the splendor of the Nation’s Capital;
- Gather feedback from our most important stakeholders – youth!
For additional information go to http://4hconf.4-h.org/default.aspx.
Youth wishing to apply as a Washington State delegate must have sponsorship by a county or state 4-H leadership board or council. If selected to attend National 4-H Conference, they will have a commitment to this sponsoring board/council to bring back the information and training they have received and utilize it within the context of that board’s service. Specific guidelines will be determined jointly between you and the board prior to attendance at National 4-H Conference.
For information, requirements and application go to http://4h.wsu.edu/members/delegate-criteria.pdf. Applications are due November 15, 2009 to Jan Klein.
Resource - Volunteering In America
--Pat BoyEs
Volunteering In America, http://www.volunteeringinamerica.gov/, is an excellent online resource that may be of some benefit to you in your work focusing on volunteerism. When I clicked on Washington State, I got some terrific comparative stats for adult volunteers. Did you know that Washington rank’s 11th overall for the number of volunteers and 5th for the number of hours those volunteers contribute?
Just a Reminder!
When you have new Extension staff that will be working in some capacity with 4-H, please let Nancy in the State 4-H Office know. They will be added to mailing lists, added to the 4-H Talk list serve, sent a 4-H Welcome Packet, and be assigned a state 4-H staff person as a point of contact, as appropriate. 4-H News is sent via the 4-H Talk list serve each week. Archived copies of previous weeks “Tuesday 4-H News” are available on the 4-H web site: http://4h.wsu.edu/. Please send submissions by Friday of each week to Tiffany Boswell, State 4-H Office, tiffany_boswell@wsu.edu. Detailed event information and registrations forms can be found on the 4-H web site.
