Clothing/Textiles Judges Training
--Lisa Harness
A judges training for 4-H and open class clothing, sewn items, and needle art exhibits is being offered in Goldendale, WA at the Goldendale Grange Hall at 228 E. Darland Street, on Friday, July 17. Susan Parr of Pierce County will conduct the workshop from 9:00am - 3:00pm. The workshop cost is $10. Interested 4-H superintendents, leaders, parents, and potential judges of 4-H, Open Class, Grange, and Make It with Wool events will not want to miss this! Participants will learn the basics of judging and practice judging garments, quilts, and other items. This is an excellent opportunity to get experience in evaluating and giving constructive comments to 4-H members and other exhibitors. Completion of the session would qualify participants to be on an updated state listing of qualified judges. Brochures and pre-registration information is available on the Klickitat County Extension website at http://www.klickitat.wsu.edu or call the Klickitat County Extension office at 509-773-5817 for more information.

License Plate Moratorium Update
--Pat BoyEs
It is with deep regret that I must report to you all that the Special License Plate Review Board, has announced that the status of the moratorium on submitting application packets for specialty license plates has been extended through 2011. As we know, the moratorium was to be lifted as of July 1, 2009.
According to the Access Washington website, it states that Senate Bill 5352 became Chapter 470, Laws of 2009, effective May 13, 2009. Section 710 (4) was indeed amended to extend the moratorium on issuance of new plates to July 1, 2011, prohibiting the board from accepting, reviewing, processing or approving any applications.
Of course this is extraordinarily disappointing news for us all. We were gearing up for a big 4-H license plate push this summer and of course it would have been a very painless way to have relieved our fiscal pressures. Please alert your 4-H friendly constituencies that the moratorium has been extended.
Announcing the 2009 National Science Experiment: Biofuel Blast!
--Submitted by Pat BoyEs
On 4-H National Youth Science Day, October 7th, young people across the nation will get a chance to examine one of the most important issues facing our nation today—energy. Youth will discover, learn and have a blast exploring alternative fuels through Biofuel Blast, the National Science Experiment.
Developed in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Extension and Wisconsin 4-H, the experiment is designed to spark an early interest in the sciences—all part of 4-H's bold goal to engage a million new young people in science, engineering and technology programs by 2013.
You can find everything you need to participate in 4-H National Youth Science Day online at www.4-H.org/NYSD. The site has lots of useful information, including the experiment facilitator's guide, interactive tools, event planning kits and much more. Plus, new features, information and promotions will be added in the months and weeks leading up to October 7th—so make sure to register to receive event updates today.

Youth Today Article
--Submitted by Pat BoyEs
I want to make you aware of a story just released in Youth Today. It discusses youth development organizations who accept funding from tobacco companies. Don Floyd, President and CEO of National 4-H Council was interviewed for this story along with several other leaders in the youth development field.
I want to take a moment to reiterate that National 4-H Council does accept funding from Altria to support Health Rocks! and the great work of Dr. Richard Lerner at Tufts University who conducts the longitudinal 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development . The funding is provided without strings attached, and the work it supports is completely independent. The reason we accept this funding is, of course, to further our mission to advance the 4-H movement and to continue to be a leader in positive youth development.
You will find the completed story at www.youthtoday.org. Feature Story - The Cent of Tobacco: As feds crack down on youth smoking, companies give millions to youth groups. By Bill Brubaker, Youth Today
