4-H National Congress and 4-H National Conference
--Jan Klein
Have you ever attended a 4-H National event? It is a great opportunity to see a ‘bigger' picture of 4-H and network with other 4-H staff and volunteers from other states.
I am accepting applications for 4-H National Congress, November 28-December 1, 2009, in Atlanta, Georgia and for 4-H National Conference, March 20-25, 2010. We are piloting a new national chaperone application and selection process and you will need to review both the chaperone guidelines and application. If you are interested in applying for either national chaperone position, please let Jan Klein know. National 4-H Congress chaperone applications are due by July 10, 2009.
WSU Offers Second Lamb 300 Short-Course
--Submitted by Jerry Newman
Washington State University Extension and Departments of Animal Sciences are excited to announce the second WSU LAMB 300 short-course that will be offered October 1-3, 2009 at the WSU Department of Animal Sciences on the Pullman Campus.
WSU LAMB 300 is a three-day, hands-on workshop designed for progressive individuals involved with the sheep industry. The course will focus on teaching producers, feeders, and marketers (regardless of the size or type of operation) how to produce and market quality lambs and lamb products. Participants will learn how environmental, nutritional, genetic, and managerial factors contribute to meat quality. Participants will also learn how meat quality factors influence the price producers receive for lamb and lamb products marketed through various outlets. This program will increase one's understanding of lamb quality and marketing, enabling participants to make informed decisions to improve profitability, competitiveness, and wholesomeness of the livestock they are producing. The course will feature nationally recognized speakers in the area of sheep production, feeding, processing, and marketing. The featured speaker for the 2009 course is Mr. Greg Ahart and Mr. Jamie Callison. Ahart is the General Manager for Superior Farm Lamb Processing plant in Dixon, California and is nationally recognized for his vast experience and knowledge in various segment of the sheep industry. Callison is the Executive Chef for WSU's School of Hospitality and Business Management. Callison is well recognized for understanding the restaurant industry and the demands of developing niche markets to local restaurants.
The registration fee for WSU LAMB 300 is $150 per participant, which covers meals, materials, and parking arrangements. Hotel accommodations will be the responsibility of the participants. The course is limited to 32 participants and will be available on a first-pay, first-serve basis. Registration deadline is September 1, 2009.
For additional information on WSU LAMB 300, contact: Jan Busboom, WSU Meat Specialist, (509)335-2880 or busboom@wsu.edu; or Sarah M. Smith, Area Animal Science Educator, (509)754-2011, Ext 413 or smithsm@wsu.edu. More information and registration forms are available on the WSU Central Animal Agriculture web page at http://animalag.wsu.edu under “Upcoming Events”.
