4-H Teen Conference Deadline Reminders
--Jan Klein

Many important dates for “Breaking Barriers – Building Bridges” 4-H Teen Conference are approaching fast. Mark your calendar with the following dates:

EM2778 Articles Requested
--Nancy Mordhorst

You are invited to submit articles and photos highlighting your outstanding county and state 4-H programming to be included in the '09-'10 CD and printed edition of EM2778, 4-H Publications and Projects. Articles should be not more than one typed page.  Photos need to be high resolution and submitted electronically. Photo permissions need to be on file.

In an effort to have the catalog ready to distribute by September 1, deadlines are being pushed ahead this year. Please submit all articles and photos to me electronically by June 18.

Livestock Show Exhibits
--Pat BoyEs

In January 2009, Dr. Leonard Eldridge, Veterinarian for the State of Washington, released the 2009 Exhibition Livestock Health Requirements.  The oversight and enforcement of these requirements are the responsibility of the show management and fair boards who conduct these exhibitions. Below is a copy of these recommendations for your reference.  One of the changes/additions noted in these requirements is:

“It is strongly recommended to supply separate barns for separate species.  Wash racks, show rings and loading and unloading equipment should not be shared between cattle and sheep/goats.  If this is not possible, cattle should be exhibited/handled first, then exhibit/handle the sheep/goats.  Practice good animal health biosecurity which includes cleaning, and disinfection.”

While it is show management's responsibility to organize the facilities, as professional 4-H educators, we are often called upon to manage the show aspects of youth events.  A number of you have raised questions with me regarding Round Robins and similar activities.  Following the recommendation of Dr. Eldridge where round robins are conducted that include sheep and goats those species should be handled last by exhibitors and before those exhibitors report to their own animals they should wash/disinfect their hands.

I would also like to draw your attention to the Animal Disease Prevention e-Learning lesson at: http://4h.wsu.edu/volntr/elearning.htm. This unit is a highly useful tool in assisting volunteers and youth in learning how to safely exhibit livestock.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to alert me at: boyesp@wsu.edu.
