Registered Premises Equine Mailing - West Nile Virus Update
--Submitted by Susan Kerr
This informational mailing should be used to notify all equine producers participating in premises registration to encourage them to vaccinate their equine against West Nile virus (WNV) prior to our WNV season. Last year, 179 WNV cases were reported nationwide, Washington led the nation with 41 horses testing positive for the disease: 26 horses in Yakima County; 10 horses in Grant County; four horses in Benton County; and one horse in Kittitas County. The letter contains information on advice for vaccination recommendations and WNV control measures.
Please forward and distribute to other producers as needed with an emphasis on producers raising equine in Yakima, Grant, Benton and Kittitas County.
President Obama on Science
--Submitted by Pat BoyEs
Many of you have been asking about the new Administration's position on science. The President ' s recent speech at the National Academy of Sciences outlines his commitment to science and provides insight as to where this Administration may be heading. I thought that many of you may be interested in this speech .
On April 28, 2009, President Obama gave a speech to National Academy of Sciences members gathered for the Academy's 146th annual meeting. He announced major initiatives to boost research funding and bolster math and science education. He said he was restoring science to its rightful place, and urged NAS members to join him in creative efforts to engage young people in science.
More details on his speech can be found at: http://national-academies.org/morenews/20090428.html.
4-H SET PSA Campaign
--Submitted by Pat BoyEs
I wanted to share with all of you some information on the current PSA 4-H SET Campaign, and how you can get involved in helping support though local efforts. The 4-H SET campaign has been sent to KVOS in Bellingham, KSTW in Renton, KOMO in Seattle, and KIRO also in Seattle.
Noted below is a "Tip Sheet” that will introduce you to Fertile Date, which is an online portal that tracks our national distribution of the PSA campaign. Once logged in, you will be able to search and sort by different markets, advertising value, and by placement - on-air, print or outdoor.
The sheet also describes ways that you can reach out to your local markets and get their support and distribution of the campaign.
I hope you find this useful, and please feel free to ask any questions.
The 4-H SET PSA, TV ad and print ad, was distributed to networks and publications nationwide in January. Distribution was targeted towards top networks in airing PSA's, LGU states, state capitals and major business centers.
To find out what TV stations are covering the PSA in your community or to check the distribution list:
- Visit: www.fertiledata.com and click on the login button
- Username: 4h
- Password: media results (include the space)
- Select “Proceed to Campaigns”
- To view the distribution list, select the link and then select your state to view which stations received the PSA.
- To view the media coverage thus far, select the Tracking Report link and choose “TV” from the Media Type drop-down menu. You can then click to view by state.
Below is a list of tips to help you get the PSA distributed in your community.
- Check the Fertile Data distribution list to see if the PSA was distributed in your community.
- If yes, contact the station's PSA or advertising director asking them if they received it and ask them to support 4-H in building our next generation of great thinkers.
- If no, visit: www.4-H.org/brandnetwork and click on “ 4-H SET PSA Campaign ” to download print ads or email at: PSArequest@fourhcouncil.edu to have a Beta SP tape sent to the TV station.
- Find out if any of your county or state 4-H volunteers or staff have personal connections with magazines or TV stations. (A Maryland 4-H club leader works for the ad department at the Washingtonian and has already gotten us three free placements!)
- Once you know an ad was placed in a publication or run on a TV station, email us at: PSArequest@fourhcouncil.edu with those details so we can be sure they're added to the system.
If you have any other ideas or need help, email us at: PSArequest@fourhcouncil.edu.
Request for Promotion and Tenure Reviewers
--Submitted by Pat BoyEs
Each year, the University of Florida have county and state 4-H faculty who are seeking promotion and/or tenure within the university. You probably do, too. We need to provide external reviewers who are qualified to review faculty packets and prepare a letter that will be included in the packet. I am seeking to build a national database of qualified county and or state faculty who would be willing to provide this review process and letter. Respondents usually have 2-4 weeks to complete a request. I am asking you to complete this brief survey at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=2Re5OwIPjxfq_2bXdLUCCxhQ_3d_3d to indicate your interest.
Just a Reminder!
When you have new Extension staff that will be working in some capacity with 4-H, please let Nancy in the State 4-H Office know. They will be added to mailing lists, added to the 4-H Talk list serve, sent a 4-H Welcome Packet, and be assigned a state 4-H staff person as a point of contact, as appropriate. 4-H News is sent via the 4-H Talk list serve each week. Archived copies of previous weeks “Tuesday 4-H News” are available on the 4-H web site: http://4h.wsu.edu/. Please send submissions by Friday of each week to Tiffany Boswell, State 4-H Office, tiffany_boswell@wsu.edu. Detailed event information and registrations forms can be found on the 4-H web site.
