State 4-H Shooting Sports Training

Attention current and prospective shooting sports leaders!  Many volunteers from across the state have requested 4-H shooting sports training.  Here are two opportunities for you!  WSU Extension in Ferry County will be hosting a training April 17-19, 2009, in Republic, WA.  The training will feature the disciplines of Archery, Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Hunting.  The fee is $50 per person.  Registrations are requested by April 10.  The University of Idaho Kootenai County Extension will be hosting a State 4-H Shooting Sports Training on April 25 and 26, 2009, at the Coeur d'Alene Rifle and Pistol Club.  The training will feature archery, pistol and rifle disciplines.  The registration fee of $75 per person is due by April 17 to the Kootenai County Extension Office.  WA and ID have similar shooting sports training requirements so Washington 4-H leaders will receive full credit for participating in the Idaho training. Registration brochures are available at: http://4h.wsu.edu/projects/shooting.htm. Online Training Module Available - Disease Prevention in 4-H Livestock Project
--Submitted by Jerry Newman and Jill Stevenson

Check out the new online training module for 4-H volunteer leaders! The Disease Prevention Module is one of two modules that are being developed by Veterinary Medicine Extension specifically for 4-H volunteer leaders who work with livestock projects here in Washington State. Online training is a great way to learn about topics that are important for youth livestock programs because it is accessible, interactive, and fun!

The first training module, called “Disease Prevention in 4-H Livestock Projects”, teaches volunteer leaders bio-security practices and how they can be used to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading diseases while raising 4-H livestock. The module is a great way to learn disease prevention and also provides inspiration and teaching ideas so volunteer leaders can bring the concepts of disease prevention to youth in their county.

To access the module, visit the Veterinary Medicine Extension site at: http://vetextension.wsu.edu/programs/4-H/index.htm or the volunteer e-learning site at: http://4h.wsu.edu/volntr/elearning.htm. If you have any questions about this module, contact Jill Stevenson at: jstevenson@vetmed.wsu.edu.

Stimulus Funding-Guide to What is Available for Youth Programs
--Submitted by Pat BoyEs

I've been receiving questions about how to find what stimulus money is available for youth programs and I just recently learned of another guide that is available. It is put out by Youth Today and is updated regularly: http://www.youthtoday.org/publication/article.cfm?article_id=2740. Other sources include www.recovery.gov, and any Federal government website has a Recovery button on their home page. Some provide more detail than others about upcoming grants. There is also www.grants.gov and www.findyouthinfo.gov.

4-H Study of Professional Staff
--Submitted by Pat BoyEs

I hope this message finds you doing well. Not unlike most everyone else, I find myself spending the majority of my time strategizing in response to budget issues. I have found it very helpful to refer to 4-H studies showing impact data when working with policy makers and stakeholders. I am grateful to everyone who has conducted these studies!

In partial fulfillment of a Doctor of Philosophy, I am participating in a study that should add to this existing body of knowledge. I anticipate that the study, entitled “Perceptions of County 4-H Agents/Educators Regarding Essential Elements and Activities of Positive Youth Development and Their Collective Impact on Character,” will show some very encouraging results.

I am taking this opportunity to ask for your support in this effort. 4-H Agents/Educators across the nation will be asked to participate in the study by completing a brief survey. The survey was pilot tested and the average completion time was 12 -15 minutes. Our intention is to send the survey out beginning Monday, March 30 – keeping it open for two weeks (March 30 – April 13).

Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact either Dr. Frankie Keels Williams at: 864-656-1491 or fkw@clemson.edu or Kellye Rembert at: 864-656-3848, 803-238-8404 or krember@clemson.edu.

Proof Positive - scientific evidence that 4-H works
--Submitted by Pat BoyEs

I am pleased and proud to share with you National 4-H Council's 2008 Annual Report, which you can access via the link below.  This year's theme, “Proof Positive,” speaks to the impact that 4-H programs are having on communities all across the country, and it communicates a very important message:  scientific evidence now proves that 4-H works.

That evidence comes directly from the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development conducted by Dr. Richard M. Lerner at Tufts University.  This comprehensive, scientific study shows that one year of 4-H makes young people more likely to contribute to their families, their communities, and themselves.  Specifically, youth in 4-H are more likely to achieve higher grades and go to college, and they're less likely to engage in risky behaviors than their peers who don't participate in 4-H.

I hope you enjoy reading our success stories as much as I did.  And this year, I encourage everyone to read those amazing stories online.  It is part of Council's continuing commitment to conserve resources and reduce our environmental impact.

New Report on the Cost of Quality Out-of-School Time Programs from P/PV
--Submitted by Pat BoyEs

Public/Private Ventures has released a new report, “The Cost of Quality Out-of-School Time Programs,” which was authored by Jean Baldwin Grossman, Christianne Lind, Cheryl Hayes, Jennifer McMaken and Andrew Gersick.  The report concludes “that there is no right cost: Cost varies substantially, depending on the characteristics of the participants, the goals of the program, who operates it and where it is located….The study highlights questions and considerations that are critical to decision-makers in their efforts to build and sustain quality OST programs for children and youth in their communities.” There is also a companion online cost calculator available at: www.wallacefoundation.org/cost-of-quality.

The full report is available for download at: http://www.wallacefoundation.org/KnowledgeCenter/KnowledgeTopics/CurrentAreasofFocus/Out-Of-SchoolLearning/Pages/The-Cost-of-Quality-Out-of-School-Time-Programs.aspx.
