Sling Pack

Goal:  What will be learned by this project?
Following directions, measuring, straight stitching using a sewing machine.

Materials Needed:

grnpushpin.gif (1016 bytes) 1 - 1/8 rd, 44-45 inch wide sturdy fabric (denim, twill, pack cloth, etc.)
grnpushpin.gif (1016 bytes) Thread to match fabric
grnpushpin.gif (1016 bytes) One cord lock (two strands of the nylon cording must fit through the cord lock)
grnpushpin.gif (1016 bytes) 1 yd of 1/4 inch wide flat nylon cording
grnpushpin.gif (1016 bytes) 2 x 4 inch piece of fusible interfacing
grnpushpin.gif (1016 bytes) Sewing machine
grnpushpin.gif (1016 bytes) Basic sewing supplies:  scissors, tape measure, gauge, pins, etc.
Optional:  Two small grommets or large eyelets and 8 x 10 inch piece of fabric for the pocket (same fabric or contrasting)

Directions to make this project:

  1. Zig-zag or serge the raw edges of the fabric and then wash and dry the fabric just like the finished pack will be washed and dried when it gets soiled from use.
  2. cut a piece of fabric 35 X 25 1/2 inches for the body of the pack.  Cut one piece of fabric 5 x 35 inches for the strap.  Optional:  from the remainder of the fabric, cut a pocket 8 x 10 inches.  Or use contrasting fabric if you wish.  See diagram.

  3. Zig-zag the raw edges of the body of the pack and the pocket.  To make the casing at the top of the pack, press a two inch fold along one long edge to the wrong side of pack body.  Press a center of the pack fold by bringing the two shorter edges together.  Open the casing and apply the interfacing to the wrong side of pack body, two inches from the edge and centered evenly over center front fold to reinforce button holes or eyelets or grommets.  Stitch two 5/8 inch long button holes or apply the eyelets or grommets on interfaced pack front, 1/2 inch from the fold for the casing and 1/2 inch apart at the center front press line (see diagram).

  4. Fold one short edge of the pocket to the wrong side 1/2 inch and press.   Fold over 1/2 inch and press.  Stitch folded edge in place.  This will be the top of your pocket.  Press 1/2 inch of the other remaining sides to wrong side.   Mark the center of the pocket at the top and bottom with pins.  Pin pocket on pack front up six inches from bottom front and centered over the center front pressing line.  Stitch pocket to pack.  Stitch again 1/4 inch from the first stitching.

  5. Fold the strap piece (5" x 35" long strip) in half lengthwise, wrong sides together.  Press.  Open and press each long edge so it is next to the center fold.  Fold on the center fold.  Raw edges will be enclosed at the center fold.   Pin open edges together and stitch.  Stitch along folded edge.

  6. Bring the two shorter sides of the pack body together, right sides facing, and stitch center back seam using a 5/8 inch seam allowance.  Press seam open and stitch the seam edges down for four inches from the top edge.  This will make threading the cording through the casing much easier.

  7. Fold the 2" casing edge back down, pin, and stitch 1 3/4" from the top edge.   this completes the casing.

  8. Center one end of the strap over the right side of the center back seam, matching the raw edges.  Stitch it in place 1/2 inch from raw edge.  Match the center back seam to the center fold at the bottom.  Stitch along raw edge using a 5/8 inch seam allowance.  Stitch again using a 1/2 inch seam allowance.  This seam is the bottom of the pack.

  9. With the pack wrong side out, press sides of pack so there is a crease.  Match side crease to bottom seam at both corners and pin.  Make a line 2 1/2 inches from the point formed across the corner and stitch along this line forming a triangle (see diagram).  This will make the bottom of the pack.

  10. Decide how long you want the strap.  Center the loose end of strap over back seam and stitch once at top of the pack and again two inches from top edge.  Tuck raw edge under before stitching the last time so it won't ravel.

  11. Thread cording through casing and cord lock.  Knot the ends of the cord together with an over hand knot.  Fill pack and enjoy!
