Quilted Heart Ornament

Goal:  What will be learned by this project?

To use small fabric scraps to do foundation piecing
To sew on straight and curved lines

Materials Needed:

grnpushpin.gif (1016 bytes) 4-½ inch square piece of muslin
grnpushpin.gif (1016 bytes) 4-½ inch square piece of fabric for the back
grnpushpin.gif (1016 bytes) 5 different pieces of scrap fabric for the foundation piecing on the front of the ornament
grnpushpin.gif (1016 bytes) Coordinating ribbon for the hanger (1/8" or ¼" inches wide)
grnpushpin.gif (1016 bytes) Tracing pencil or fabric marker

Directions to make this project:

  1. Trace a heart pattern of your choice , including numbers onto your muslin square. The lines that you draw are your sewing lines and the numbers are the order that you will place your scraps on the muslin to sew them on. All sewing is done with the pattern or the traced lines up. Check to make sure that each of your fabric scraps extend at least ¼" beyond all lines around the area they are suppose to cover. It is all right for them to be even larger as you will trim them after sewing.

  2. On the plain side of the muslin, place your #1 fabric with the right side facing up. You will have to hold the muslin up to the light so you can be sure it covers the area marked #1 on the reverse side. This will be the only piece of fabric that will be placed right side up. Remember that your fabric needs to extend at least ¼" beyond all the lines around area #1. Pin the scrap in place.

  3. Take your #2 fabric and place it right sides together (wrong side up) with fabric #1 and over the line between 1 and 2. The seam allowance is made by the fabric extending ¼" into the #2 area. Pin along this line. After pinning, you may want to fold over the #2 fabric to make sure that it will cover the #2 area. Adjust if needed.

  4. Turn the muslin square over and sew on the line between area #1 and #2. Sew right on the line, starting a little before where the line starts and ending a little after where the line ends. The extra sewing will be covered up, so it will not show.

  5. Trim your seam allowances to ¼" and flip the #2 fabric over so the right side is showing. Make sure it covers its area. Press it in place.

  6. Continue sewing on the remaining scraps in order. Remember to trim and press after each seam.

  7. To secure all your fabric, sew a ¼" beyond the heart-shaped line on the muslin.

  8. To make the hanger, fold a piece of ribbon in half. Pin it on top of the right side of your pieced heart (not the muslin side), so the loop is in the center and the cut edges are extending past the center top of the heart.

  9. To put the back on your ornament, place the other fabric square right sides together with the pieced side of your heart. Sewing on the muslin side, follow the traced heart shape line (not the stitching line you used to secure your fabric scraps). Be sure to leave a small section on one side that is open so you can turn your heart right side out. Trim and notch the seam allowance. Turn the heart right side out and hand stitch the opening closed.

Note: This ornament can be used to decorate gifts at Christmas, hung on a Christmas tree, or used as a small gift on Valentine's Day. Filled with a small amount of potpourri, it can be hung on a clothes hanger or put in a lingerie drawer.
